A Review of Zumu.co

I'm sure you've seen the commercials by now. Zumu.co (no, that's not a typo) offers to pay cash for your used CDs DVDs and video games. All you need to do is type in the bar-codes of your items, review what Zumu will pay you for them, put them in a box and ship them off. Once all your items are checked in, Zumu sends you a check. Sounds easy enough, right? But how does it work? And is Zumu legit?

I was looking to get rid of a lot of the clutter around my house which meant that I'd be throwing out a bunch of media that I no longer used, most of which had been sitting in my attic for several years. I used the Zumu app on my phone to scan the barcodes, accepted the offers for my items, printed out the shipping label (Zumu pays for shipping up front) and shipped the items off. Four weeks or so later, I got a check for over $30. Not bad for a bunch of old Wii games and obscure movies.

At the very least, I can attest in this review that Zumu.co is legit. They're not going to scam you and just run off with your used stuff. I will say though, that if you're going to sell used items to Zumu you will have to make sure that you are aware of their policies and that you follow their submission guidelines to the letter. So far, I have no complaints about Zumu.co but I know that there are folks out there who aren't too pleased with them for a number of reasons. If you're wondering whether or not you should sell to Zumu, I've got a list of tips for selling to Zumu.co written below.

Tips for selling to Zumu

  • Don't sell to Zumu if all you have is fairly new stuff. You won't get your money's worth. Sell your newer stuff to Gamestop or SecondSpin.com and sell you older items to Zumu.
  • They have a pretty strict acceptance policy. If there are any scratches on your discs or any rips and tares in the packaging, Zumu won't accept your item.
  • It states in their terms of service that Zumu.co will not return any items to you that it deems unacceptable. I have no idea what they do with the unacceptable items.
  • If you're going to take the plunge and sell to Zumu.co you need to find at least 10 items to bundle together. Zumu does not accept shipments of less than 10 items.
  • Zumu does not use PayPal, so, if you have a successful trade, you'll be waiting a while for your check. I waited about four weeks. No problem. But, I have heard of some instances of Zumu neglecting to send checks or checks getting lost in the mail. At that point, you'll have to deal with Zumu customer service.
  • Be smart about what you sell. Don't sell an item to Zumu if you think you can get more money for it via eBay or a yard sale or something.
So, the bottom line here is that Zumu is a legit service that is great for getting rid of those old CDs DVDs and games that are cluttering up the back of your media drawers. If you set out with a mindset to clear out the clutter, you won't be disappointed. If you're looking to make a ton of money from selling to Zumu then you're doing it wrong.

Update 11/25/2013: Due to the number of complaints and scam allegations that have permeated this article, I've e-mailed the folks at Zumu.co and have invited them to respond to the allegations of delayed payments, bounced checks and lost merchandise. I'll post their response if/when it arrives, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

  2. Zumu is an aweful company full of excuses and delays in making payments! I have been waiting over 2 months for my payment. This is just a sample of the nonscence I've been putting up with:

I see that your trade has completed its processing here at Zumu! Due to a large increase in business in 2013, we have become slightly delayed in our processing of payments, as well as orders. We are very grateful for your business, thank you! Your payment has been processed and assigned to a payment cycle based upon it's completion date. Your payment will be issued to you 6/21/13, you will be notified via email when your payment is sent to you!
If you need anything further please let me know.

    Thank you for using Zumu!
    Have a wonderful day!

    2. Wow me too its been six months since I sent my items and I keep getting the exact same message every time I contact them. And they have no phone number so yeah definitely lost about $50 to them.

    3. It has been over 7 months for me. Lost over $100. I will be filing a lawsuit. That is what they are betting on. Take your items then not pay you. I for one will not be letting them get away with it.

    4. same here, its been 9 months for me. Contacted them several times via email and same old automated reply!

    5. They supposedly lost my shipments of over $100 worth of DVDs and CDs and will not respond to emails.

    6. Sent a huge box in January. Contacted them in February, received form email back. Just received my entire box of cds, completely ripped and broken, back in the mail, with a message frim.the USPS, saying i owe them 11 bucks for shipping. It seems Zumu pulled a return to sender on me, after they opened the box!! I am livid.

  3. Yeah, I have gotten the same letter and have heard from others who have experienced similar delays, in some cases, up to three months. I have yet to hear about anyone getting outright screwed over. Still, it is best to think of Zumu.co as a place to send and forget your old CDs. Then, when you do eventually get paid, it is a nice surprise.

    1. Yeah I got that exact same email several times as well. Have filed a complaint with the BBB.

    2. If you look on the BBB website under the Zumu.co listing, you'll see that there are already a number of complaints. Most people are making complaints, Zumu is responding, apologizing, and paying out. I think, if you want to initiate real change, you might have to stick to your guns and indicate that you want further restitution because of the large delay. I don't know, though. I have never made a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the Zumu terms of service probably has language in there protecting them from such penalties.

But, if you do file a complaint with the BBB make sure you come back and let us know how it went.

    2. I sent Zumu some stuff and they said They were going to send me a check for $40.. dollars and that's cool. However I sent it all to them in April and it is almost November. They have sent me a few emails saying they are going to look into it and nothing has happened yet. So until I cash that check they promised me over six months ago I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that yes they are a scam and do not use them

      Delete
  5. So basically they can say anything you send them is "unacceptable" and keep your $$$?? That's a bunch of BS. At least put it back in the original box and mark "return to sender!!"

    1. That's the sketchy part, yeah. It definitely puts control in the hands of Zumo.co rather than the seller and it was my first inclination that there might be a scam involved. This is why I keep saying that, if you're going to send them something, make sure it's stuff that you'd end up throwing away anyway. I can say, however, that in the three times I've used Zumo.co they have never denied any of my items.

Also, once a package is opened, you can no longer mark it "return to sender", so that's simply not an option.

  6. Don't even think about using this company...

...unless you want to lose your CD/DVD/Video Games and/or have to wait MONTHS for payment, I could go on and on about their poor "customer service" cut/paste answers which blame everything except their company.

Needless to say, I currently have a BBB complain filed and later today I will be talking with the Office of Michigan Attorney General.

Next step will be with the FTC, then Apple and Google to get their app removed from store/marketplace, then on to small claims court. Stay tuned!

    1. As I read their entry on the Better Business Bureau website, Zumo.co is still accredited by the BBB. There are a total of 60 "closed" complaints. Not sure what that means or what happens when you complain to the BBB about zumo.co and their slow pay time. If you do file a complaint, make sure to report back about the process.

      http://www.bbb.org/eastern-michigan/business-reviews/dvd-sales-and-service/zumu-llc-in-grand-blanc-mi-90021144/

Small Claims court is a great idea. With enough interest, you might even be able to bring a class action lawsuit against zumu.co and their affiliates. And obviously, you'd file it in Michigan because Zumu is based out of there.

  7. My Zumu experience has been ridiculously disappointing. Not only did it take approximately 5 months to receive a refund that was less than quoted, but the check for $13.30 bounced and i got charged a fee of $12.00 from my bank for Zumu's lack of funds.

    Totally disappointing

    1. They bounced a check? That's a new low. I hope you sent them a bill for the bounce fee.

  8. If I ever even get a check, I'm not gonna cash it. Don't want all the bounced check fees everyone else is getting. I know someone who sent their stuff to Zumu in January 2013. They are still waiting too... What a ripoff. Lesson learned I guess.

    1. I don't think I've seen a Zumu commercial in over a month and I certainly haven't changed my TV viewing habits. This, along with the bounced check issues I've read about makes me wonder if the company is having a small cash flow crisis.

I haven't used the service in several months, so I can't really comment on how well or poorly Zumu is doing these days. Is Zumu a scam? Or is Zumu just unreliable in certain instances? I may have to send them a bunch of old stuff just to investigate further.

  9. If you are thinking about using Zumu to get rid of some old DVD's, PLEASE, I beg of you to think again! You will be saving yourself from a horrific customer service experience - one that can only be described as one frustrating excuse after another - crafted so Zumu can avoid issuing payment. First, I was never even contacted to notify me that my products had arrived in their warehouse. When several weeks had passed and I had not yet received payment, I emailed them. The first excuse was that they were changing billing cycles and everyone's payments were back-logged. However, they promised to push me to the front of the line. Sure! No payment. When another couple of weeks passed, I inquired again - this time with the promise to file complaints with the Better Business Bureau and State's Attorney General if payment was not received by the end of the week. Needless to say, once again payment was not received. Now, months have passed since I sent in my DVDs. I filed my complaints on a Sunday and on Monday I received an email from Zumu that my check was being processed and would be mailed soon. Like everything else with Zumu, I will not believe it until I see it. I firmly believe that Zumu is nothing more than a scam; a business with deceptive practices who preys on weak consumers. I have viewed other on-line complaints from individuals who have had issues similar to mine. Zumu plays the odds that many customers will not fight them for their money and simply give up; when people do fight back and contact agencies like the BBB - Zumu capitulates and pays-up. This is a disgusting way of doing business and probably illegal. DO NOT do business with Zumu and please share this message!

  10. Zumu is the devil. DON'T USE THEM. They will never pay you for the stuff you send them.

  11. I have used zumu in the past, and the only problem I had back then was somewhat slow payment. But the checks did come and they did cash. But then this year, back in April, May and June, I sent out 9 more cases of stuff. I did receive 3 checks, 2 of which were good, and the other not signed. The 2 cashed with no problem, but I contacted zumu about the other, and they said that they would reissue. I am still awaiting that one and 6 others. I've inquired about all 7, and got the same message as stated above. I'm done using this site, and if I ever get my checks, i may or may not cash them. I now use music magpie, and they bare awesome with better prices and extremely quick turnaround. STAY AWAY FROM ZUMU!!!!

  17. My items were mailed in May 2013 and I have still not gotten paid and it is December. I have written numerous times and been told my items were processed and the check is being sent and never have received a date or a check. I have written the BBB twice, the first time they just closed the complaint. I just wrote to them again today and I am also going to write to the attorney general office. I am really finding it hard to believe that anyone has ever received a check from them. Now I read that the checks bounce. What a joke. I would suggest NEVER to use this company for anything.

    1. Biggest liar on the face of the planet", huh? I think you're being a tad over-dramatic about this. I wrote this review nearly a year ago, and, as indicated, I got my check without a problem. I can't speak to how Zumu has been operating since April of 2013, but, at the very least, if I were such a huge liar, would I let all of these negative comments get published? It's pretty obvious that Zumu.co got overwhelmed by all the exposure their advertising campaign generated and has never been able to catch up.

And what kind of moron sends in $500 worth of stuff and accepts only $46 for it? You'd have had better luck selling them to SecondSpin.com or at a garage sale.

  19. Sent ZUMU 106 items, they were received on 5/23/13. Each time I email ZUMU, they reply with "We do not have an exact date when your payment will issue." So this is their way to ignore your requests. I know of NO class action suit against this company, so they are getting away with this. You can bet dollars to donuts, they have flipped items sent to them. It's a great scam, and since they are using US Mail system, we can only hope, sooner or later federal authorities will catch up to them. (YES ZUMU, using the United States Mail Service is a FEDERAL offense)

  20. My pre-loved things were processed on July 27,2013 and still till today, December 16 2013, I have yet to receive my payment. I have sent them 5 emails asking if they can give me an eta on when I can expect payment and the answer is the same as the last...we cannot give you an exact date and we are working very hard to satisfy all of our customers. I'm sorry but almost 5 months later your telling me that you haven't fixed you "payment process"...then the GREAT people at Zumu haven't been working as hard as they say! Don't use them. The beginning process was very easy, but have not received payment! Is there a class lawsuit or anything against them?
